Mrs Popovienė meets ministers in charge of education and sport in German Land of Hesse

Minister of Education, Science and Sport Raminta Popovienė and Deputy Minister Giedrius Grybauskas received Minister of Education, Culture and Opportunities of the German Land of Hesse, Armin Schwarz, and Minister of Family Affairs, Elderly Affairs, Sport, Health and Care, Diana Stolz.

The meeting discussed topics of mutual interest. These include the physical activity situation of children and young people, physical education in schools and after-school sport activities, the specificities of funding for physical activity and high-performance sport and the search for sustainable models.

"When we started our work, we identified four priorities: education for equal opportunities, lifelong learning for all, higher education that creates international value, a physically active society and the sustainable strengthening of high-performance sport. Like most countries in the world, we are faced with a lack of physical activity in our society, both among children and adults, so creating opportunities to be physically active – by adapting and opening up more sport infrastructure, organising mass events, and contributing to the funding of non-formal education activities – is our important goa," said Mrs Popovienė.

Deputy Minister Mr Grybauskas introduced the guests to the existing national physical activity programmes, the system of financing physical activity projects and high-performance sport, the challenges and the solutions under consideration.

With regard to high-performance sport, the guests said that there was a lot of debate in their country about whether the state should support all sports or only those with the most potential to win medals at the Olympics.

The guests noted that they were also faced with the problem of low physical activity among children and young people. Schools also offer three compulsory weekly physical education lessons, and after-school sports clubs to promote physical activity. The priority at the moment is to teach children to swim, and the guests were interested in the Lithuanian experience in organising swimming education in schools.
