  Research interests:

Taiwan, as well as Latvia and Lithuania, are young democracy in all three countries law plays more and more important role on organization of private, social and political life. Complex contemporary social systems elevate the position of judiciary in contemporary democracies. Antimajoritarian institutional provisions and human rights impose some restrictions on the role of legislature and executive powers and place judiciary in special place in pollical systems. Judiciary had been playing a special role in development of democracy in all three countries.

The research hypothesis is that judiciary in young democracies played special role which require self-restrain. This is connected with epistemic authority of judiciary which is not restricted to legal but also require considerable extra-legal knowledge.

The aim of the proposed research is to compare judges’ attitudes to and opinion of democracy and rule of law. It will be done by semi-structured interviews with judges on different level in the system of administration of justice in respective countries.

The questionnaire will include question about self-identity of judiciaries in respective countries (self-reflections about the status) and questions regarding their knowledge and education and nomination procedures.

The outcome of the research will be more realistic empirically oriented comparative analyses of the role of judiciaries in young democracies with stress on similarities and differences. It will be substantive contribution to comparative constitutional law.

Research Area: Environmental catalysis, catalytic air pollution control. Catalytic abatement of NOx, VOCs, SOX, Cl-compounds, COx, ozone decomposition, catalytic oxidation  and catalytic reduction of gas-phase pollutants, mechanisms for these reactions, and  catalyst characterization and stability.

Research Topic: Low-temperature SCR of NOx with NH3 over metal (Mn, Ce, Cu) oxide catalysts

Air pollution is one of the most concerning world challenges. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 80% of people living in urban areas that monitor air pollution are exposed to air pollution levels that exceed the WHO recommended limits. According to European Society of Cardiology, air pollution causes 8.8 million extra early deaths a year.

Regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), nitrogen oxides (NOx), a contributor to acid rain and SMOG, and may pose a health hazard to people in areas of high exposure. A Selective Catalytic Reduction or SCR system is one of the most common processes for reducing NOx emissions during fossil fuel combustion.

In our collaboration we aim to prepare / synthesize the catalyst, test and do best possible characterization of it. Mn-Ce-(Cu)-V2O5-WO3/TiO2 composite catalyst is one of the promising gas-phase pollutant removal catalysts for SCR at low temperatures.

  Research interests:

Currently the group is working to find out mechanisms which are involved in formation of auxotrophic starvation specific phenotype in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
Purine nucleotide auxotrophy is typical trait of many eukaryotic parasitic organisms. Nucleotide  metabolism is target for several immunosuppressant therapies,  and is also foreseen as potent target for eukaryotic parasite control. Budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is excellent eukaryotic cell model organism and powerful tool for drug screening.
Understanding mechanism of yeast cell reaction to nucleotide auxotrophy would facilitate yeast application in specific drug screens, developing strategies for control of biotechnological relevant auxotrophic strains, etc.

We have hands on expertise in following methods:
- microbial cultivation (from microcultivation in 96 well plates to laboratory scale fermenters of several litres);
- yeast protein tagging and immunofluorescence;
- yeast stress tolerance assays (oxidative, weak acid and heat stress,  desiccation tolerance);
- enzymatic assays (photometric, fluorometric or luminescent detection);
- qPCR.

  Research interests: The principal interest of the project could be in pituitary tumor research. Our research group performs studies related to pituitary adenoma genetic predisposition, potential non-invasive monitoring and genetic and functional characterization of tumor material. We have established collection of pituitary patients’ biomaterials: tumors (over 80) used for DNA, RNA extraction and primary cell line development, and blood samples (over 220) used for plasma, sera and DNA isolation. These samples include various pituitary adenoma subtypes - growth hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, prolactin secreting and non-secreting pituitary adenomas. We also have collection of associated clinical data. Currently, we explore, somatic mutation detection in tumor derived DNA, cell free DNA and microRNA identification in patients’ plasma and tumor cell sorting and characterization. These research directions could be pursued in proposed project, however, we are open for propositions in other areas like pituitary adenoma research in mice models or drug effectivity studies. We have access to wide range of research infrastructure at Latvian Biomedical Research and Study centre: (1) Genome Centre (2) Cell culture and microscopy facility (3) Animal core facility, (4) IT and bioinformatics unit.

  Research interests: Migration in general, ageing and migration, medical tourism, exchange of experience of making, leading migration research centres and cooperation with stakeholders at national and international levels.

Summary of research proposal:
This collaborative research project proposal has interests about return migration in later life as well as medical tourism in the context of ageing society. Nevertheless research topic can be changed in the future discussion according to the interests of the all 3 partners. Further in this document is the ideas about the research proposal as Latvian and Lithuanian research centres have discussed it.
So far the title of the research could be: Ageing and migration: maximizing opportunities for healthy later life. Comparative studies in Latvia, Lithuania and Taiwan.
All the countries are approaching the fact of ageing society. Also, ageing and migration has become one of the most topical issues in recent migration research worldwide. Our approach is based in well-being concept and understanding of people’s own needs during return migration or home visits in later life.
Moreover, such approach would provide detailed bottom-up understanding for practical policies, which need to incorporate viable solutions for those, who want to return home and have specific needs due to ageing. In the meantime, those diaspora members who do not want or cannot relocate to homeland permanently but use medical and recreational services back home time to time, would reveal so far under researched in little understood ways of cooperation between state, service providers and diaspora members themselves.

Big portion of the human-to-human communication goes through non-verbal communication, i.e., hand gesticulation, facial expression and etc. The novel communication devices and robots should perceive and understand not only verbal or clearly discriminated commands, but also non-verbal signals w hich are more natural for humans. Such novel devices should use actuating force such as gesture, facial expresions, the eye gaze. During last decade the interest in such assistive or associative technology devices, so called gaze tracking systems and non-verbal (based- on gestures) communication, have been rapidly grow ing. This communication system w orks using video camera that captures fast motions of user eye, facial expressions and hand gestures. The object tracking systems recognizes specific motion of the user and associates the commands to the external device or/and to the applications on the computer.

Cooperation project w ill cover the research on the novel non- verbal communication type used for remote robot control and
„eye-to-eye“ communication w ith a robot.
