At the end of upper secondary education, pupils are required to take matriculation examinations.

All graduates who want to obtain a school-leaving certificate must take 2 state exams: one in Lithuanian language and literature and one freely chosen exam. The Mathematics state matriculation exam is required if the student plans to enter higher education with only exception of  Art studies.

The matriculation exams are split into two parts, to be taken over two years, in the penultimate and final school year.
