Europe and Latin America strengthen cooperation in research and innovation

During the Summit held on September 29 in Brussels, representatives from the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) agreed on cooperation in research and innovation. The agreements set out shared priorities, concrete actions and governance to guide inter-regional cooperation in the years ahead. This EU–CELAC Research and Innovation Ministerial was the first meeting of its kind.

Dr. Regina Valutytė, Vice-Minister of Education, Science and Sport, who headed the Lithuanian delegation, stressed that the academic community in both Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean is facing similar challenges: limited financial resources, the need to make more efficient use of the existing research infrastructure and to share it more efficiently, and the need to attract more private investment in research and study institutions.

Dedicated Working Groups on climate change, environmental sustainability and energy transition, health and artificial intelligence will be set up in the near future. These groups will prepare 18-month action plans to put these commitments into practice. Ministers will reconvene every two years to review progress, update priorities and set strategic steer.
