Head of Riga Lithuanian Secondary School: we have become one of the leading educational institutions
On 24 April, Minister Raminta Popovienė attended the 35th anniversary celebration of the Lithuanian Secondary School in Riga. She met students and teachers and visited the new school building.
“Throughout these years, the school has become a significant centre for fostering the Lithuanian language, culture and national identity in Latvia. Here, young people not only gain knowledge but also develop into civic-minded personalities who are able to feel confident in a bicultural environment. Your activities are important not only for the Lithuanian community in Riga but also for strengthening Lithuania’s cooperation with Latvia,” said Minister Raminta Popovienė in her greeting to the participants of the ceremony.
Riga Lithuanian Secondary School was founded in 1991. The school operates in accordance with the educational standards approved by Latvia’s Ministry of Education and Science. It also provides Lithuanian language, ethno-culture, Lithuanian history and geography classes, offers drama and dance groups and various clubs. The Lithuanian language is compulsory from Grade 1.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Lithuania has provided the school with two school buses, equipped it with hardware and other tools.
A few years ago, the school was given additional premises as the number of pupils grew each year. With the support of Lithuania’s Ministry of Education, Science and Sport and the implementation of a cross-border agreement, the premises are being renovated and adapted to meet modern needs.
In the school year 2025-2026, the school has 751 pupils in 35 classes.
“Seeing our school grow and strengthen is the greatest reward for the whole team. Becoming one of the leading educational institutions in Riga was no coincidence; it is the result of focused work, continuous investment in the learning environment and a strong connection with Lithuania. We are proud that more and more families are choosing our school, not only for its high academic achievements, but also for its unique value axis. Today, we are a modern, renewed and ambitious school where every pupil gets the best possible start for the future,” says Jolanta Nagle, the Principal.
Riga Lithuanian Secondary School is considered to be one of the best schools in Latvia, with good results in centralised exams.
