Lithuania to offer state scholarships to talented foreign students seeking to work in Lithuania
Foreigners and Lithuanians of foreign origin studying in Lithuania will be invited to apply for state scholarships. The aim of the support is to encourage talented foreign students to integrate into the Lithuanian labour market and improve their Lithuanian language skills. A total of 20 students committed to a traineeship in Lithuania will receive scholarships.
"The Ministry of Education, Science and Sport is developing a model for the integration of foreign students in Lithuania to encourage the most talented students not only to complete their studies in Lithuania but also to integrate into the Lithuanian labour market. We particularly hope to attract students in computer science, life sciences, technology and engineering, with the aim that final year students or graduates who have completed their traineeships will enter into an employment contract with the employer who has taken them on," says Regina Valutytė, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Sport.
The scholarships are open to final-year Master's or Advanced Master's students who have committed to a 2-month traineeship with Lithuanian companies. The traineeship must be related to the student's chosen study programme. The traineeship scholaraship would be €650 per month.
The selection of candidates for the scholarships will be carried out by higher education institutions. The applications submitted by higher education institutions will be evaluated and the scholarship winners selected by the Education Exchange Support Foundation.
The commitment to develop a model for attracting and integrating foreign students into the priority sectors of the Lithuanian labour market is also included in the implementation plan of the 20th Government. The new model will help promote the cultural, social and economic integration of foreigners studying in Lithuania and the training of qualified specialists in priority sectors. Scholarships for foreign students are one of the instruments of this model.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Sport has set up a working group of experts to develop the model, including representatives of the Ministries of Education, Science and Sport, Social Security and Labour, Health, Transport and Communications, Foreign Affairs, Interior, Agriculture, and Economy and Innovation, as well as Invest Lithuania, the Migration Department, the Conferences of Rectors of Lithuanian Universities and Principals of Lithuanian Colleges, the Lithuanian Student Union, the Student Representation of Vilnius University, the Education Exchange Support Foundation and the Lithuanian Community of the World.
