Lithuania – World Geography Olympiad champion: four gold medals
Lithuanian students triumph in the International Geography Olympiad. At the XXI International Geography Olympiad (iGEO) held from 26 July to in Bangkok, Thailand, the Lithuanian team won four gold medals, and for the first time in the history of the Olympiad, won first place among almost 50 countries.
Gold medals were awarded to Rojus Kondratavičius and Faustas Kondratavičius, LSMU Gymnasium (teacher Jovita Vizbarienė), Ugnius Vilimas, Vilnius Lyceum (teacher Jolita Milaknienė), and Tomas Jakubauskas, Palangos senoji gimnazija (teacher Nerijus Vaišvilas).
The team was trained for the Olympiad by geographer Rytas Šalna (President of the LGMA), Angelė Pakamorienė (expert teacher at Gargždai "Minijos" progimnasium) and Edgaras Zaboras (Geography Olympiad alumnus).
"This has never happened before in the history of Lithuania or iGEO. Our students' geographical knowledge, skills and thinking abilities are ahead of the world's historically strongest countries," says geographer and team leader Rytas Šalna. Our students outperformed countries such as Singapore, USA, Indonesia, Finland, China and Poland.
