Lithuanian–Polish working group discusses education for national minorities
A working group on education for the Polish national minority in Lithuania and the Lithuanian national minority in Poland met at the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport.
Representatives of education authorities in both countries met for the second time, following an inaugural meeting in Warsaw a month earlier.
The meeting focused on textbooks in national-minority languages, including their availability in schools and the need and possibilities for translating them into Lithuanian or Polish. Since 2023, Lithuania has published 28 Polish-language textbooks for subjects including computing, mathematics, science and history. Work has also begun on Polish-language textbooks for teaching the Polish mother tongue in primary schools.
The group discussed challenges facing national-minority schools in Lithuania and possible solutions, including class sizes, the school network and related funding issues.
Pupils in Lithuania can study in Polish at 59 general education schools across five municipalities. In Poland, there are five schools providing formal Lithuanian-language education and three institutions providing non-formal Lithuanian-language education.
In the autumn, the working group will submit proposals for an agreement to the Lithuanian and Polish education ministers. The group’s next meeting is scheduled for September in Warsaw.
