Minister R. Popovienė discussed scientific cooperation with the State Secretary of the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space

On October 20, at the Research Council of Lithuania, Raminta Popovienė, Minister of Education, Science and Sport, met with Marcus Pleyer, State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, to discuss cooperation between the two countries in the field of research.

Minister R. Popovienė emphasised that the deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania has given new significance to the strategic political partnership between the two countries. In addition to cooperation in the field of security, efforts are being made to strengthen ties among teams of researchers.

“The scientific communities of Lithuania and Germany collaborate closely – our researchers carry out joint research projects, and students actively participate in international exchange programs. In Lithuania, we are looking for ways to continue making progress in science. We are currently actively seeking full membership in CERN; in fact, Costas Fountas, the President of the organization’s Council, is visiting Lithuania at this very moment. Membership would open up many new opportunities for our researchers and help attract young talent to the science and engineering sectors,” the Minister said.

During the meeting, the upcoming Lithuanian presidency of the Council of the EU and the priorities of the residency in the field of research were also discussed. M. Pleyer expressed hope that Lithuania’s presidency would be a success and emphasised that, in today’s geopolitical context, Lithuania’s pro-European stance is very important and relevant to the EU.

M. Pleyer is meeting today in Vilnius with the heads of research groups at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory Partnership Institute (VU GMC-EMBL PI) and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. During the meetings, he will be introduced to the centres of excellence being jointly developed by Lithuanian and German research institutions, as well as other recent Lithuanian research initiatives.
