Preparations for biggest international Olympiad in Lithuania underway: representatives of the International Board of the International Biology Olympiad arrive in Vilnius

On November 6th, the International Board of the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) Association from Germany visited the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport. During the meeting, preparations for the 37th International Biology Olympiad to be held in Vilnius next July were discussed. This is the first time that Lithuania will be hosting such a big international Olympiad, with up to 900 participants from around 80 countries.

The International Biology Olympiad, under the motto “Nature - Culture - Community”, will be held in Vilnius, on 12-19 July 2026. The opening ceremony will take place at the LVSO Concert Hall and the closing ceremony at the LITEXPO Centre. Participants will complete tasks in molecular biology and biochemistry, animal physiology, plant computational biology, animal anatomy and systematics. The tasks are developed by researchers from Vilnius University.

Teams from abroad will be given guided tours of Vilnius Old Town and a train trip to Trakai.

The International Olympiad is organised by the Lithuanian Agency for Non-Formal Education, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport and Vilnius University.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Education, Science and Sport accepted the invitation to organise the International Biology Olympiad back in 2023. Lithuanian students have been participating in the Olympiad since 2006.

Lithuania also hosted the International Physics Olympiad in 2021, but due to the pandemic it was held remotely.
