Vice-Minister Jonas Petkevičius presents the achievements of the Lithuanian education system at an international event in Kyiv
Vice-Minister of Education, Science and Sport Jonas Petkevičius attended the 5th Kyiv Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen, initiated by First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska. This year’s theme was “Education Shaping the World”. The event was attended by First Ladies and Gentlemen, Nobel Prize laureates, Ministers of Education, experts, representatives of IT companies and teachers from various countries. Discussions focused on how education not only provides knowledge, but also builds resilience, a culture of coexistence, the ability to cooperate, and peacemaking capacities.
A discussion with Ministers of Education followed the presentation of the international study on the Role of Education in Shaping Personality, National Social Capital, and a Culture of Peace, covering 14 countries. The study highlighted that Lithuania has an efficient education system and is achieving relatively good outcomes.
Over the course of several days, discussions focused on access to education, innovation, the role of education in building lasting peace and the role of teachers. Participants also gave open lectures at 12 Ukrainian universities, museums, children’s centres and schools.
The Lithuanian delegation visited the Lithuanian-Ukrainian Lyceum in Borodianka. With the support of Lithuania and Taiwan, the school, which can accommodate 700 children, was rebuilt and reopened in March last year. The project, worth almost EUR 8 million, was funded by the Lithuanian Fund for the Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, while EUR 1.8 million was provided by the Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania to furnish the school and build the outdoor infrastructure. This project, initiated by the Lithuanian Government, was implemented by the Central Project Management Agency.
The school has an underground bunker, landscaping, sports fields, furniture, computers and other modern equipment. Back in July 2023, a teacher exchange visit was organised, and a sports camp for 40 pupils from Borodianka was organised in Lithuania.
Launched in 2021 by Ukraine, the Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen is an international platform bringing together participants from more than 40 countries. Its mission is to find common solutions, exchange experiences and innovate to address humanitarian challenges.
