An international meeting of education assessment leaders in Vilnius: focus on future learning and innovation

On 18–19 June 2026, an international event took place in Vilnius, bringing together experts in educational assessment, policymakers, and practitioners from various countries around the world. Participants from Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and other countries of the world discussed how education systems can better adapt to a rapidly changing environment, strengthen students’ competencies, and ensure that assessment becomes a tool not only for monitoring but also for promoting learning.

During the event, much emphasis was put on the concept of alignment between educational content and assessment – how to align educational content, instruction and assessment so that they consistently support students’ learning and development.

The event was coordinated by the National Agency for Education; one of the meetings took place at the Ministry of Education, Science, and Sport.

“The Lithuanian education system is currently facing the same challenges as countries around the world: how to make learning truly meaningful, how to provide students with key competences, how to strengthen teachers’ authority, and how to seamlessly integrate artificial intelligence into the classroom. It is very important to ensure coherence among the curriculum, the teaching process, and assessment, so that there is harmony in what we teach, how we teach it, and how we assess it.

Today, as we discuss various ways of aligning the educational process with the assessment of learning outcomes, my greatest wish is that we share our insights without leaving a single child behind. Every student has different needs, different abilities, and a different path to progress. We must take this into account when considering how to improve assessment tools and systems,” said Jonas Petkevičius, Vice-Minister of Education, Science, and Sport.

During the meeting, experts emphasised that it is important for education systems not only to develop innovative assessment tools, but also to ensure that such tools reflect real learning objectives and help every student make progress.

There was also a presentation of an international, collaboration-based platform for digital assessment solutions, enabling countries to share tasks, data, and innovations and to develop modern assessment systems more effectively.

The event in Vilnius was part of a series of meetings organised by the international educational organisation FLIP+. FLIP+ is an important international organisation that promotes innovation in education and strengthens collaboration among institutions, researchers, and practitioners. It serves as a collaboration platform designed to share knowledge and experience and to develop innovative learning and assessment solutions.
