Awards to pupils who represented Lithuania in international Olympiads
Pupils who represented Lithuania in international Olympiads and competitions, their teachers and team leaders were honoured in the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.
In total, pupils won 69 prizes in Olympiads for various subjects in 2025: 8 gold, 20 silver, 28 bronze medals and 5 letters of commendation, as well as 1 first place, 4 second places, 2 third places and 1 special prize.
Raminta Popovienė, the Minister of Education, Science and Sport, welcomed the fact that not only pupils from Lithuania’s major cities, but also from smaller towns had participated in international Olympiads and won prizes, and encouraged the young people and their teachers to participate even more actively in national and international science projects.
R. Popovienė also thanked the teachers, parents, and team leaders whose support helped the pupils to achieve the results that make the whole country proud.
Lithuania – world champion in the Geography Olympiad
In 2025, all the 8 gold medals won by Lithuanian pupils were won at international Geography Olympiads. Our young geographers also excelled at the European Geography Olympiad, which took place in Vilnius in 2025. All but one of the participating students won medals, including four gold ones.
Last year, our country was ranked 43rd in the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad in Australia, the highest ranking in 10 years. As many as 5 Lithuanian pupils came home with bronze medals, and one of the problems in this Olympiad was developed by Paulius Aleknavičius, a Lithuanian who had previously participated in this Olympiad and won a gold medal. This was the third time the Olympiad featured a task proposed by Lithuania.
Lithuanian students were also successful at the 36th International Biology Olympiad in the Philippines, where they won two silver medals and two bronze medals. The 37th International Biology Olympiad will take place in Vilnius this summer. This will be the first time that a Biology Olympiad of this scale will be held in Lithuania, with up to 900 participants from around 80 countries.
Last year, at the 55th International Physics Olympiad in France, the Lithuanian team won 2 silver medals, 1 bronze medal and a letter of commendation. This was the best performance of our representatives at this Olympiad over the years. Furthermore, there were four bronze medals at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad in the United Arab Emirates.
Shone brightest
The most successful young people in international science events last year were the gold medal winners at the International Geography Olympiad, including Rojus Kondratavičius and Faustas Kondratavičius, LSMU Gymnasium, teacher Jovita Vizbarienė; Ugnius Vilimas, Vilnius Lyceum, teacher Jolita Milaknienė; Tomas Jakubauskas, Palanga’s old gymnasium, teacher Nerijus Vaišvilas.
Tomas Razbadauskas, a student of KTU Gymnasium, was an excellent performer, taking part in four Olympiads (International and Baltic Chemistry Olympiads, International and European Physics Olympiads) and winning medals in all of them (2 silver, 1 bronze and the 2nd place).
Emilijus Latakas, a student of the Klaipėda Lyceum, also demonstrated excellent results, taking part in the International Biology and Astrophysics Olympiads and winning silver medals in both. Emilijus, who is currently studying at Cambridge, says that international Olympiads and medals have not only helped him to develop a better understanding of the field he has chosen to study - chemical engineering and biotechnology - but also helped him to gain admission to the University of Cambridge, where international Olympic achievements are highly valued.
Most of the medallists from KTU Gymnasium and Vilnius Lyceum
According to LINEŠA, a total of 78 of our country’s pupils took part in international Olympiads and competitions last year; they were trained by 63 teachers and accompanied and led by 35 team leaders. Among the participants and winners of the Olympiads, students from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) Gymnasium and Vilnius Lyceum were most numerous.
