European agenda for sport discussed in Cyprus as part of Lithuania’s preparations for Presidency of the Council of the EU

On 15-16 April, Giedrius Grybauskas, Vice-Minister of Education, Science and Sport met with representatives of the European Commission and attended the annual EU Sport Forum, the European Commission’s flagship event for shaping the future of sport in the continent. This year’s Forum focused on mental health, transparency and solidarity, and competitive balance in the field of sport.

At the Forum, which brings together the heads of EU institutions, representatives of national ministries, Olympic Committees and international sports federations, Vice-Minister Grybauskas took part in the discussion “Move more, live better – why movement matters at every age”.

The Vice-Minister discussed the importance of physical activity together with Glenn Micallef, European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport, Jean-Michel Saive, President of the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee, and Irshad Ali Shaikh, Director of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Office in Cyprus.

Preparations for the Presidency

Vice-Minister Grybauskas also met with representatives of the European Commission and Commissioner Micallef. The meetings dealt with the sports agenda as Lithuania is undergoing preparations for Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The EU Sport Forum 2027 is projected to be held in Lithuania.

“It was important and useful to meet with leaders of different levels, from the Commissioner to the Agency Directors and all the staff working on the EU Presidency in the field of sport. We have put forward and presented our proposed topics, as we would like the EU to be involved in addressing them,” summarised the results of the visit Vice-Minister Grybauskas.

The topics on this year’s agenda reflect the growing role of sport in addressing today’s societal challenges, from enhancing emotional well-being to ensuring transparent governance.
