Funding for Lithuanian language schools increased this year
The Ministry of Education, Science and Sport is allocating almost EUR 2 million to 132 Lithuanian language schools abroad, which have more than 7,200 pupils, to finance their Lithuanian language education programmes.
This year, the basic funding per pupil has been increased to €15 per month. This marks an increase from €12.5 per pupil per month last year. The funds for a particular school can increase up to €30 per pupil per month, depending on the intensity of the Lithuanian education programme.
"We support and strengthen Lithuanian language schools because their contribution to preserving Lithuanian identity abroad, teaching the Lithuanian language to children of compatriots living in other countries, introducing them to the history of our state, ancestral customs, contemporary Lithuanian culture, and establishing and strengthening ties with Lithuania is invaluable," said Minister Raminta Popovienė.
Lithuanian state budget funds will reach Lithuanian language schools around the world. Funding will be made available not only in countries with a large Lithuanian diaspora, such as the USA, the UK, Norway, Ireland, but also in Oman, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Chile, Uruguay, Singapore, etc.
in 2025, 124 Lithuanian language schools, attended by more than 7,000 pupils, received financial support from Lithuania. in 2024, 90 non-formal Lithuanian education institutions were funded.
Lithuanian non-formal Lithuanian education schools operating abroad and providing Lithuanian education programmes are supported by the Lithuanian state budget from 2023. Only those schools that run Lithuanian language education programmes that meet the general criteria set by the Lithuanian Minister of Education, Science and Sport for such programmes can receive funds from the Lithuanian state budget. There are currently three approved programmes for Lithuanian education: the Integrated Programme for Lithuanian Education (developed by the Ministry), which is recommended for all Lithuanian schools, and two US programmes for 1-4 grade students.
In order to receive funds from the Lithuanian state budget, Lithuanian educational institutions must be registered in the Register of Lithuanian Education and Science Institutions, and their pupils must be registered in the Pupil Register. The funds are transferred to the Lithuanian educational institution for the current calendar year, after the Lithuanian educational institution has signed a contract for the financing and implementation of Lithuanian educational programmes.
