Innovation in Lithuanian higher education: possibility to study in several fields at the same time
Lithuanian higher education institutions will expand the diversity of Master’s degree programmes as new interdisciplinary programmes will be introduced. Universities will be able to offer study programmes combining two or more fields of study, enabling students to learn to solve complex problems and combine different approaches, and higher education institutions to train specialists for emerging professions that are not covered by a single field of study.
The Description of Interdisciplinary Studies was approved this week by Raminta Popovienė, the Minister of Education, Science and Sport.
Universities are planning to offer new interdisciplinary study programmes later this year.
An interdisciplinary study programme covers several fields of study, which may be implemented by several units of a higher education institution, or even by several higher education institutions. The aim is to develop skills in different fields of study and to learn how to creatively apply different approaches, theories and technologies.
The interdisciplinary model can be applied to studies in 2nd cycle (Master’s degree). Higher education institutions that offer studies in all the fields integrated in the interdisciplinary study programme will be allowed to organise interdisciplinary studies.
Graduates will be awarded the Master’s degree corresponding to the name of the study programme, and the diploma will state that they have completed the interdisciplinary study programme, while the diploma appendix will list the fields of study integrated in the study programme.
The model of interdisciplinary studies in Lithuania is based on best practices in other European countries: Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Belgium. The European Commission also recommends to apply this model of study.
