Lithuanian car mechanic wins a medal of excellence at Europe's biggest vocational skills competition
Edmundas Baliukonis, a Lithuanian car mechanic, was awarded a medal of excellence at EuroSkills, the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in Europe. A graduate of the Vilnius School of Car Mechanics and Business (VAVM) proved his excellence in the transport sector.
Edmundas was mere 2 points behind the bronze medal, finishing with 4th prize, and was awarded for the highest professional excellence.
This year's EuroSkills competition was held in Herning, Denmark. Hundreds of young people from 33 countries come together every 2 years to compete for the title of the best professional in Europe. This year, the Lithuanian team consisted of 8 professions: tailors, a web programmer, a car mechanic, a hairdresser, a beautician, a confectioner, a cook and a waitress.
The EuroSkills participants are selected through national competitions. In the international competition, they have to demonstrate their vocational skills in both individual and team tasks. Performance of the tasks requires sophisticated technical knowledge and skills, which are acquired by young people through vocational training in an educational institution or on the job.
Lithuania has been taking part in EuroSkills competitions since the first competition, which was held in the Netherlands in 2008.
Edmundas was the third VAVM student to be awarded a medal in the competition. 2010 was marked by a silver medal won in the section of car mechanics in Portugal, and the first gold medal was won in the same section in 2023 in Poland. In 2023, representatives of Lithuania also won a bronze medal in the sector of programming and a medal of excellence in welding.
