Lithuania’s position on research and innovation priorities presented at the EU Competitiveness Council
On 30 September, the EU Competitiveness Council held a meeting to discuss research and innovation issues. The meeting agreed on the importance of research and innovation for EU startups and scaleups, and called for action on life sciences for the competitiveness of the EU.
The delegations of the Member States also emphasised the promotion of innovation, talent attraction and closer cooperation between science and business. Lithuania was represented by the Vice-Minister of Education, Science and Sport, Dr Regina Valutytė.
The political debate focused on the opening up of the Horizon Europe programme to dual-use and defence research. EU ministers discussed ways to strengthen the EU’s competitiveness and resilience through this new approach to dual-use and defence research. Many delegations welcomed the inclusion of dual-use projects in the Horizon Europe as most research projects already have a dual-use dimension, especially in technology areas.
