Minister Popovienė meets with Olympic athletes in Milan

Today, the Minister of Education, Science and Sport, Raminta Popovienė, met with the athletes of the Lithuanian Olympic team.

“It’s a special feeling to be here. Tthe Olympic Games are a huge event for the athletes involved and for all those who support them.

I followed our athletes’ performances and I’m very happy about the young athletes making their debuts. I was sincerely supporting them.

For me, all of our Olympians are already winners. They have invested an incredible amount of work to be able to compete with the best athletes in the world. Thank you for setting an example that even the biggest dreams can be achieved through hard work,” the Minister said.

Lithuania is represented by a record team of 17 athletes at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. This is the largest Lithuanian team ever to compete at the Winter Olympics: 8 biathletes, 4 cross-country skiers, 2 downhill skiers, 3 figure skaters – an ice dance pair and a single skater.

Although the country’s athletes did not win any Olympic medals, the 6th-placed pair of ice dancers will be eligible for a state prize and a scholarship for their high achievements, while biathlon and alpine skiing will be awarded state scholarships.

The closing ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics takes place on 22 February.
