Minister Popovienė to attend the EU Education Council in Brussels, meet the Secretary-General of the European Schools

Minister of Education, Science and Sport Raminta Popovienė and Vice-Minister of Education, Science and Sport Giedrius Grybauskas will participate in the EU Education and Sport Councils in Brussels, Belgium on 11-12 May.

On 11 May, EU Ministers responsible for education will discuss how national education and training strategies can be better tailored to provide learners with the skills they need for tomorrow’s market. The role of teachers in the AI age will also be discussed and the new Erasmus+ programme for 2028-2034 will be looked at.

On 12 May, the Sport Council meeting will discuss the sports tourism policy and issues of strengthening mental health in sport. Lithuania will be represented by Vice-Minister Grybauskas.

During her visit to Brussels, Minister Popovienė will meet Roxana Mînzatu, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, who is responsible for social rights and skills, quality jobs and preparedness.

She will also meet with Andreas Beckmann, Secretary-General of the European Schools, to discuss Lithuania’s forthcoming Presidency of the European Schools system. European Schools are educational institutions run by EU Member States and provide multilingual and multicultural education. The European Schools system is made up of 13 traditional schools in 6 countries and 24 accredited schools in 14 countries. Lithuania will take over the presidency of the European Schools system from 1 August 2026, when Latvia ends its presidency. This will be the first time that Lithuania will preside over the system.
