State support for foreign nationals and foreigners of Lithuanian origin who choose to study in Lithuania

Foreign nationals and foreigners of Lithuanian origin who have chosen short-term and master degree studies in Lithuanian higher education institutions will receive state support – the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport will provide them with monthly scholarships to cover the cost of studies in Lithuania.

“The number of foreign students in Lithuania is steadily growing, but we aim to attract even more of them and thus encourage greater internationalisation of studies. Funding studies in Lithuania is a way to make our higher education more attractive to foreign nationals as well as foreigners of Lithuanian origin. Having successfully completed their studies, foreign nationals can be motivated to stay and use the knowledge they have gained during their studies to work here,” says Gintautas Jakštas, Vice-Minister of Education, Science and Sport.

Students from the Eastern Partnership countries, Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) countries and Lithuania’s priority business market countries are eligible to apply for short-term studies in their chosen field. Up to 35 scholarships will be available to finance these studies. The scholarship will amount to EUR 490 per month for bachelor and master students and EUR 980 per month for doctoral students. Foreigners of Lithuanian origin who apply for the scholarship will be given an extra point during the competition.

100 students from abroad are invited to choose full-time master degree studies in Lithuanian higher education institutions. Monthly scholarships and additional support are available for citizens of Ukraine (60 scholarships), citizens of Armenia, Sakartvelo, Moldova, and foreigners of Lithuanian origin (20 scholarships in total), citizens of Belarus (10 scholarships), and citizens of Azerbaijan (5 scholarships). A total of 5 monthly scholarships will be granted to students from Israel, China, Japan and South Korea. One scholarship amounts to EUR 490 per month.

In order to attract more foreign students to higher education institutions and encourage them to stay in Lithuania, a working group of higher education experts was set up at the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport in December 2022. The working group is proposing a strategy to attract and integrate foreign students, including foreigners of Lithuanian origin.
