The Ministry will finance Lithuanian studies for foreign nationals and foreigners of Lithuanian origin

Higher education institutions and research institutes are organising Lithuanian studies for foreign nationals and foreigners of Lithuanian origin, which will be financed by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport. Interested students are invited to choose between summer courses and short-term studies aimed at deepening their knowledge of Lithuanian language, culture and history.

“Every year we allocate funds for Lithuanian studies. The aim is to strengthen Lithuanian education abroad, to support Lithuanian projects, teachers’ professional development, and the studies of students of Lithuanian origin. Lithuanians living abroad are an integral part of our nation and their knowledge and experience is always welcome in their homeland. Education allows us to encourage foreigners to take an interest in Lithuania and the Lithuanian language, and to share our culture,” says Jurgita Šiugždinienė, Minister of Education, Science and Sport.

Students, teachers and researchers from all foreign countries, including foreigners of Lithuanian origin, are invited to apply for the Lithuanian language and culture summer courses. These courses will take place in 6 Lithuanian research and higher education institutions: Klaipėda University, Mykolas Romeris University, Vilnius University, Vytautas Magnus University, the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore, and the SMK University of Applied Sciences. The duration of the summer courses is one month and the scholarship amounts to EUR 735 for contact courses.

Teachers and lecturers working with pre-school and school-age children or adults in Lithuanian educational institutions abroad will also have intensive Lithuanian studies this summer. The duration of these studies is 15 calendar days and they are organised by Klaipėda, Vilnius and Vytautas Magnus Universities and the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore.

Foreign nationals and foreigners of Lithuanian origin can also apply for Lithuanian short-term studies of 1 or 2 semesters at the Lithuanian higher education institution of their choice. A total of 15 scholarships have been envisaged to finance these studies: 10 scholarships will be granted to students, lecturers and researchers in linguistics or philology from all foreign countries, and 5 scholarships will be granted to foreigners of Lithuanian origin. The amount of the scholarship is EUR 735 per month.

There are 239 non-formal Lithuanian education institutions abroad, with about 8 600 children foreigners of Lithuanian origin and over 1 000 teachers. There are also about 40 Centres of Lithuanian (Baltic) Studies worldwide. They have about 1 100 students.
